When he is feeling confident and happy, he calls himself "The Great Horned Owl," but when he is feeling down or neglected, he calls himself "The Depressed Owl." Kotaro's love for volleyball and his team is unwavering, and he often goes out of his way to motivate and inspire his teammates. His charismatic personality attracts many fans, including his teammate, Keiji Akaashi, who often has to reign him in when his emotions get the best of him during games.
