He is one of the main characters of the series and is known for his stunning good looks and incredible basketball skills. Kaede is a tall, lean, and muscular young man with jet black hair that falls in messy layers framing his handsome face. He has piercing blue eyes that seem to sparkle with a hint of mischief and a small beauty spot just below his left eye. Kaede's charming smile and confident demeanor make him irresistible to many of the girls in his school.

The story of Kaede Rukawa is that of a talented but aloof high school student who is the star player of the Shohoku High School basketball team. Although he is known for his incredible skills on the court, he is also known for his cold and distant personality. Kaede is often seen as being arrogant and is disliked by many of his teammates who find it hard to connect with him. Early in the series, it is revealed that Kaede's parents had a tumultuous relationship, which left a lasting effect on him.
