Raphtalia's story in the anime, The Rising of the Shield Hero, begins when she was a child and her parents and friends were killed by monsters known as the Wave. Raphtalia became Naofumi's sword after he saved her from severe malnutrition and the effects of the slave mark. She learned to harness her powers as a demi-human raccoon-type slave with a high level of agility, speed, and dexterity. Gradually, she finds a connection with Naofumi, and their master and servant relationship evolves to a romantic pair. Raphtalia helps her master to overcome discrimination and hatred as they seek to save their world from the curse of the Waves.
